However, professional whitening performed in the dental office can provide results up to 10 shades whiter.  The difference in the final color lies in the higher percentage of hydrogen peroxide in the professional gel.  The professional strength requires supervision by a licensed dentist to prevent damage to the tooth enamel. 

Professional whitening sessions only last from 30 to 60 minutes, and while it may take several sessions to lighten darker shades, the time from the first appointment to the final one will be shorter than with over-the-counter treatments.
